Primary food production
Safe and high-quality products require safe and high-quality ingredients. Global primary production and initial processing allow crops grown anywhere in the world to reach markets globally. Given this, crops are cultivated with the end product or final product of the crop as raw material in mind. Most fruits and vegetables are directed to the market either as fresh produce, primarily processed through preservation and/or pasteurization, or marketed as frozen products.
Proteko has worked on numerous projects in primary food production, particularly in implementing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), including the introduction of the GLOBAL GAP system.
An increasingly important piece of information that consumers demand is how these products are produced. The separation of organically and conventionally grown raw materials, especially fruits and vegetables, presents a challenge and requires a robust traceability system. A particular focus is placed on the production of so-called eco products, which in Croatia are regulated by the Ordinance on Organic Agricultural Production. Products can now be labeled with the organic product symbol on the EU market. The terms used on products include "bio," "eco," or "organic."
